Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1984 and three Academy Awards, Seuss was the author and illustrator of 44 children’s books, some of which have been made into audiocassettes, animated television specials, and videos for children of all ages.

I recommend the book Black Is a Rainbow Color as a means to both acknowledge how the color black is loaded with historical baggage, but is also a strong color that reflects a powerful culture as well. I have personally found this works especially well with children on the autistic spectrum and very young (pre-verbal) children. Having read it a few times, my 6yo will pick this up at random times to help show us the colour of her mood. Based on a 2007 online poll, the National Education Association listed the book in its "Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children".My son does not tend to choose this at book reading time when it is next to so many more exciting looking books, for this reason. Dark colors represent emotions ranging from anger to sadness, while light colors represent emotions like happiness. his iconic characters, stories, and art style have been a lasting influence on generations of children and adults.

it's a fast read for Seuss, and so deep and meaningful, I wish there were adult versions and a self help series built around this concept for the parents! That said, when we read it, my son is happy to discuss how he has been feeling and it prompts conversation about what he has done that day (when getting this info is like getting blood out of a stone usually)! This made for a great talking point about feelings and how they can come and go but not define our personality with my nursery drama class. In 1957, Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat became the prototype for one of Random House’s best-selling series, Beginner Books. These colors have the modifier bright attached to them because other shades of red and blue can be characterized as darker, which would oppositely be aligned with low energy. There needs to be a shift from color preference, asking children questions like “What is your favorite color? Seuss, Thedor Geisel also used the pen name Theo LeSieg (Geisel backwards) for books written by him, but illustrated by others.

Bought for my gradaughter who’s 6 and had some medical treatment that was very difficult for her and I wanted a book about our feelings . Adults continue to be complicit with societal labels around color ranging from religious conceptions of black as evil and white as pure, to gendered labels such as blue representing boys and pink representing girls, and then they pass those ideas onto children. This can foster negative self-concept for Black and Brown children and teach misleading information about various identities and diversity. I bought a copy because I was already familiar with it from the past having read my bros one when he was younger and he threw his copy out.

This is a book good for starting conversations about feelings rather then directing or teaching about them directly. I had never heard of it but she recommended it to help my little guy identify his emotions so that he could learn to explain them rather than acting out. I'm reading it with my 3year old and the no pressure no drama style means some days she wants to talk about feelings in the book and other days she'd rather just list the animals illustrated inside - and that's perfect for us as it provokes thought and discussion rather then force feeding information. Seuss's youngest concept book is now available in a sturdy board book designed especially for his youngest fans. We have had the odd conversation after reading it that reflects the colour of the day that we have had - or how we felt in colours when we fell out or did something fun.
