Still, I was too afraid to face the silence of sitting with myself, most afraid that I would hear nothing and nothing and nothing again. It took society grinding to a halt for me to throw up my hands and reluctantly concur: ‘fine, I’ll write it’. Anorexic, my sister had said. The word hadn't stopped ringing in my head since she said it. When I first heard about anorexia, I never planned for it to become my thing. I didn't connect to it or dwell on it or decide to try it out for a while. All I'd known was that I was empty, unremarkable, unexceptional at everything, and that it would be hard to find love, friends, work, a place in the world at all, if I didn't find something by which to define myself – and then I'd found it.

The book also has an uplifting, dare I say inspirational tone, without being cheesy. She reminds us that there's intrinsic value in pursuing art. You don't have to be the best there is to benefit from making something. See: these words sound so lame and cliché when I say it point blank in a review. But in the book, it works. The fact that she was able to play this character in the film is such a cool turn of events in my view. Lynch has such an interesting life already, even just outside of the role in the films. Her work with climate/environmentalism and veganism shows an obvious passion and ability to channel her energy into something she cares about.I was aware of Evanna Lynch only because she had starred as one of my favourite HP characters, Luna Lovegood, in the movie adaptation, and she did such an admirable job of bringing Luna to life. I had heard that this memoir dealt with her struggles with anorexia, something I hadn’t known about before. And I had assumed that this struggle started as an aftermath of her success in moviedom, as a result of the pressure to look well all the time. But I was wrong in this last point. Her battles with anorexia began when she was eleven, long before many kids even know what the word means. Ramachandran, Naman (22 August 2023). " 'Harry Potter' Star Evanna Lynch to Headline 'Influenced!' Inspired by Oscar Wilde's 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' – Global Bulletin". Variety . Retrieved 23 August 2023. One of the most interesting parts (to me) was how she found herself in Luna Lovegood and the Harry Potter series. She talks about reading them in the hospital and becoming “entranced” by Luna’s character. The more she reads, the more she finds herself skipping looking for Luna to show up again. She loves how the character seems to exist outside of the problems in the book and bringing a sense of calmness and uniqueness to every scene.

In Half-Blood Prince, Luna is first seen on the Hogwarts Express. When some other female students invite Harry to join them in their compartment by saying that he does not have to sit with Luna and Neville, implying that they are undesirable companions, Harry witheringly says, "They're friends of mine." Luna observes in her bluntly honest way that people expect someone like Harry to have "cooler friends than us". Harry's response, indicative of the increased fondness he has developed for the pair, is that she and Neville are cool. Goldstein, Ian (11 February 2021). " 'Dancing With the Stars' Season 27 Cast Revealed -- Meet the Celebs and Their Pro Partners!". Entertainment Tonight . Retrieved 12 September 2018. When Harry visits the Lovegood home, he notices several pieces of evidence that Luna hasn't been home for weeks despite it being Christmas break: dust over a photo of her and her mother, no clothes in her wardrobe, and her bed, which looks like it hasn't been slept in for some time. It is then revealed that while heading home for Christmas on the Hogwarts Express, Luna was kidnapped in an effort to keep her father from publishing information in support of Harry in The Quibbler. When Harry, Ron, and Hermione are at the Lovegood home, Xenophilius, desperate to save his only child, betrays them to the Death Eaters in the hope that doing so will secure Luna's release. The trio narrowly escapes - only to land in the cellar of Malfoy Manor as captives themselves a few months later. There, they find Luna being held hostage along with Mr Ollivander the wand maker. They are all rescued by Dobby the house elf, who brings them to Shell Cottage, the home of Bill Weasley and his wife Fleur Delacour, where protective enchantments keep them safe. I had barricaded myself away from love, stripping away life’s most simple, frivolous pleasures one by one, until my world was completely boarded up from the affections of others, impenetrable and unforthcoming.Regan, Jarlath (21 June 2015). Evanna Lynch has long been viewed as a role model for people recovering from anorexia and the story of her casting as Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter films has reached almost mythic proportions.
