Iberian lynx – Lynx pardinus". Species Data Sheets. United Nations Environment Programme – World Conservation Monitoring Centre. 2004. Archived from the original on May 10, 2008. Lynx are a genus of short-tailed cat from the family Felidae. This family also includes other types of cats, including cheetahs, lions, leopards, domestic cats, and tigers. Both lynx and tigers are cats, but lynx are not tigers. Unlike tigers, lynx have very short tails that usually reach between 10 and 20 centimetres in length. Is a bobcat a lynx?

Carnivores split into two groups – Carniformia and Feliformia– around 40 million years ago. The Carniformia group was more bear-like and evolved into bears, dogs, weasels, raccoons, skunks, badgers, sea lions, walruses, and seals. Feliformia was more cat-like and evolved into cats, hyenas, and mongooses. During summer the Eurasian lynx has a short brown-reddish coat, that changes in colour with the season and turns more grey-brown or silver-grey during winter. 10. Lynx have a short stubby tail

The Eurasian lynx has lived up to 21 years in captivity. The Canada lynx is known to live up to 27 years in captivity and between 10 and 16 years in the wild. The bobcat lives between 7 and 10 years in the wild, with one notable exception being 16 years. In captivity, the oldest bobcat lived 32 years. Iberian lynx have a maximum wild lifespan of 13 years.

Several lynx resettlement projects begun in the 1970s have been successful in various regions of Switzerland. Since the 1990s, there have been numerous efforts to resettle the Eurasian lynx in Germany, and since 2000, a small population can now be found in the Harz mountains near Bad Lauterberg. Lynx are medium-sized wildcats that live closer to you than you might think, in dense forests across the United States, Europe, and Asia. There are four main subspecies of lynx, one of which is the well-known bobcat. Bobcats can be found in almost every state in the US. The Canada lynx lives mostly in the boreal forests of Canada, and the Eurasian lynx lives in Europe and Asia, from France to Korea. The Iberian lynx has the smallest population by far and lives in just a few areas of Spain. The Eurasian Lynx played a critical role in European ecosystems for millennia. They’re the third-largest predator in Europe and the largest of the four lynx species. While they’re not quite as big as a wolf, they’re still listed as top predators and therefore have a significant impact on their environment. Bobcats, Canada lynx, and Eurasian lynx are listed as least concern on the IUCN Red List. However, the Iberian lynx is listed as endangered. Their current range is restricted to just two isolated areas in Spain, and the population is estimated to be 156 mature individuals. Their numbers are increasing, though. The latest assessment in 2014 changed their status from critically endangered to endangered. Proailurus, the oldest cat, appeared in France 30 million years ago. This aboreal creature weighed around 25 pounds and had eight more teeth than modern cats. 20 Million years ago, the direct ancestor of modern cats, Pseudaelurines, was found in the fossil record. Around 1.6 million years ago, the saber-tooth tiger, Smilodon, was found in fossil records discovered in the La Brea tar pits in California. These big cats became extinct around 10,000 years ago.

The Canada lynx lives primarily in Canada, Alaska, and some parts of the northern United States. The bobcat can be found in every part of the United States as well as southern Canada and most of Mexico. The Iberian lynx is only found in southern Spain. The Eurasian lynx lives in Russia, Scandinavia, parts of Europe, parts of Turkey, and northern areas of China and Tibet. The Canada lynx may look like a slightly larger version of your housecat, but make no mistake, these boreal predators are ferocious! With big eyes and super hearing, Canada lynx are excellent night hunters. But they are not fast runners, so they have to be sneaky when it comes to catching prey. Usually, they find a hiding spot and wait for prey to come near — then they pounce. Some lynx will sit still for hours just to snatch a bite! Canada Lynx". Science & Nature: Animals – Wildfacts. National Wildlife Federation . Retrieved March 1, 2013. The oldest lynx remains, approximately four million years old, were found in Africa. The ancestor of the four lynx species is believed to be Lynx issiodorensis, which was distributed all over the northern hemisphere. The Eurasian Lynx entered North America across the Bering Strait Land Bridge about 2.5 million years ago. The different lynx species evolved to suite their environments – resulting in the four species that exist today.Players assume the role of a blue-collar contractor working on behalf of LYNX as a spaceship salvager, or “cutter,” harvesting derelict cruisers and mammoth starships scavenged from the far corners of the galaxy, in exchange for safe passage off-world. What happened to those ships before you got there? Well, that’s questionable and maybe legally murky. But salvage laws aren’t, and there’s money to be made. The Iberian lynx is listed as endangered, due to poaching, fragmentation of habitat and the decline of its main prey, the European rabbit (due to rabbit haemorrhagic disease). Interesting Lynx Facts 1. Only half of the offspring survive the first year The Canada and Eurasian lynx and bobcat have a conservation status of least concern. The Iberian lynx is considered endangered. As of 2015, 400 Iberian lynx live on the Iberian peninsula. The United States population of bobcats is estimated to be several hundred thousand. The Eurasian lynx population is thought to be around 45,000 and is considered generally stable. The Canada lynx population is also stable and is thought to be in the tens of thousands.
