About this deal

The subject matter couldn’t have been more timely or relevant, as night after night we hear of another stabbing, of another, often young person in our cities. The case is complicated by the fact that it is in the middle of a two year ongoing undercover operation being run by Shaw to bust a gun trafficking deal.

Lizzie Griffiths and Sarah Collins, two members of the force, are both also involved in this case but coming at it from very different angles. I have not read the other books in the series (there are two I believe), so the characters were new to me. Sydney Morning Herald: “A realistic, tense and multi-layered story containing a two-sided moral question, all crowned by a thoughtful and compassionate ending tinged with a little sadness.Yes, I know they do it but it makes me irrationally angry so seeing either (or both) term cropping up every few pages grated. To begin, a disclaimer that I didn't realise this was part of a series before I started reading it, so I was slightly thrown off by some of the backstory that didn't make sense, but ultimately it can really be read as a stand-alone story.

Shaks is an old family friend as he knew Ryan’s dad before his untimely death and exacted revenge on the person responsible. I haven’t read either of the previous two books in the series – Post Mortem and Death Message – but Gallowstree Lane worked perfectly well as a standalone, although when I get the chance I’d like to go back and read the first two.

It’s set in 2016 London and covers gang culture, crime and the knife crime prevalent at the moment amongst young men. London was equally brilliant at her portrayal of the investigation and I was pleased that it wasn’t cold or unfeeling.
