Ghost Eaters: A Novel
About this deal
His tattered Vans keep slipping, reminding me of that puny kid on the playground who doesn’t have the upper body strength to pull himself up the monkey bars on his own. Ok and then in the middle of all this we have the revelation that Amara, Erin's alleged bestie, was shebanging Silas on the low. This haunting memory leads the sailor back to his first command and a desperate river journey to rescue missionaries along a remote jungle river. I really truly think there is a gold mine here in this book I just don't know if it was all thought through or put onto paper as well as it could have been?
Later, Bakhos would proclaim him as leader of the beastmen tribes, investing him with his authority, but Ghosteater took the other gathered leaders to talk amongst themselves, confirming that he wanted to unite them for themselves not to serve the Blessed Ones. Chapman weaves hair-raising, goosebump-inducing horror through a sharp exploration of loss, addiction, and grim history. Chapman doesn’t hold back in the nightmare fuel department, as we travel through Richmond, Virginia with Erin as she starts seeing more and more ghosts after ingesting a drug that has this explicit purpose.
The island world Vanders discovers is a ghostly place, darkly lit with the flames of social upheaval, a world of superstition and strife, as age-old ways of life are swept away in the murderous rampage of a tribe gone mad. When her friend Tobias suggests a new drug, Ghost, that allows its user to communicate with the dead, Erin jumps at the chance in hopes of seeing Silas one more time.
Something of uncommon rarity requires special training or comes from a particular culture or part of the world. I get that this is a toxic relationship, but there was a failure to show why Erin couldn't make up her mind. You feel helpless as you’re watching things just fall apart for her and watching her try to dig herself out and just keep getting sucked back down like she’s battling quicksand. This modern era marks the rise of giant Mega-corporations like Orion Tactical and Nihon Synthetic, which dominate global commerce and effectively puppeteer what's left of the the world's governments. Also, I just know I’m not gonna like whatever happens because I’m so annoyed with the story, and I don’t feel like nit-picking it to death. This book is beautiful and poetic and haunting, and I've never been so emotionally affected by a book before.
So, this book has a lot of elements: grief, addiction, loss, guilt, literal ghosts, metaphorical ghosts, relatable main characters, mushrooms. as the beastlord had expected he set off in pursuit, but also named Ghosteater as commander of the armies in his absence. Lovecraft emulated Eddy's writing style in parts, making it challenging to distinguish their contributions. The idea of a highly addictive drug which allows you to interact with ghosts is a unique one, but while Clay McLeod Chapman shows some real talent throughout the book, the plot is muddled and highly unsatisfying. He hides behind a dresser, as a tall unfamiliar man enters the room and proceeds to lie down in the bed before going to sleep. This novel was mostly about a group of four post-graduate friends struggling with addiction, and the insanely dark path it leads them down. Ghost Eaters is filled with deeply gorgeous writing that never gets in the way of itself, it only enhances the experience. By the time we abandon campus and hop the wrought-iron fence surrounding Hollywood Cemetery, the four of us are all well on our way to peak fry.
