Mr. Crabtree Goes Fishing: A Guide in Pictures to Fishing Round the Year
About this deal
The Royalty remains one of the most popular and prolific Barbel fisheries in England, although amazingly The Hampshire Avon in it's lower reaches does contain more than one species! The subsequent strip was a huge success, and in 1949 a book featuring the fishy adventures of Mr Crabtree and his son and apprentice Peter was published. I bought this book as I'd heard a great deal about how it was an inspiration to many young anglers when it was first released in the form of newspaper segments. Henry from Devon and John fish numerous lakes, deploying different methods and tactics depending on the environment and enjoying the natural world as they fish for all species.
THE CLOTH COVERED SPINE IS WORN AND STAINED WITH BUMPING AND SMALL TEARS AT BOTH ENDS, WHICH HAVE STARTED TO FRAY. The illustrations are beautiful and the book symbolises the innocence and adventure of a good day's fishing.Any fisherman knows that the boy in the angler never dies and reading this book is like taking a trip back in time. I bought this for my fishing mad 7 year old it is in a format he will read and enjoy and is still as relivent at getting the basics across as it ever was. The watercolours are so evocative of the British countryside and its wildlife and delight fishermen and non fishermen alike.
It is the comic strip story of a father who takes his son Peter on a series of angling adventures over the course of a year catching species such as chub, pike, carp, roach, tench and trout, on rivers and lakes. Crabtree to a new generation of anglers, to share our love of fishing for all species, and to help us spread the word. Of course, I've enjoyed reading this much more than Henry has, part of that is probably that we are still stating his age in months instead of years, but hey it's good to start reading to them at the earliest age, so may as well read something about fishing right?Even though the tackle is a little dated since it was written in the 50's, the tactics and info on how to catch fish year round are still just as valid today as they were back then.
For freezing winter days, sitting with slippers in front of the fire, a hot toddy to hand and Mr Crabtree Goes Fishing in your lap - Bliss. This book is in good condition for its age other than some minor signs of wear and a little grubby on the page edges.
