Not All Heroes Wear Capes: The incredible story of how one young man found happiness by embracing his differences
About this deal
Growing up, he experienced many hurdles in life relating to how he was perceived and treated by others. Biography: Ben Brooks is the author of the bestselling and ground-breaking Stories for Boys Who Dare To Be Different, which was the winner of Children's Book of the Year at the National Book Awards. The publisher says that “no matter what you look like, this book is for anyone who has ever felt ‘out of place’,” adding: “In his inspiring debut memoir, Jono shares his remarkable story and how he has come to find true happiness. As the title suggests, this is not a book about superheroes, though comparisons are made, nor is it (necessarily) a book about famous people, though they are mentioned. The book is honest and raw and hits some really dark topics which are handled with brutal, heart wrenching honesty.
So, the publisher says, he became his own advocate, the role model he wished he could have had as a kid – his own hero. I got a copy of this from The Corn Exchange in Manchester after the author, Jono Lancaster kindly donated copies for his book launch. Registered office address: Unit 34 Vulcan House Business Centre, Vulcan Road, Leicester, Leicestershire, LE5 3EF.
Jono Lancaster was born with Treacher Collins Syndrome - a condition that affects facial appearence - and at only two weeks old, he found himself in foster care. I have a friend who also has Treacher Collins syndrome, another beautiful person who lives her life with a mixture of fun, grace and dignity. Not All Heroes Wear Capes would be an excellent book to use in PSHE sessions, enabling children to think positively about themselves and what they can achieve.
I just finished it, stood up and applauded, in celebration of Jono's and Jean's life and the opportunity I had to meet him in person after one of his conferences at Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. The author hasn’t let his physical condition and abandonment bring him down and after a bumpy quest, he has become his own superhero on self love with many kind superheroes by his side.
