About this deal

Visitors to the exhibition can learn more about Dippy, the Jurassic period and how the natural world we inhabit has changed over time, with talks and activities for all the family to enjoy.

Herbert Art Gallery & Museum is an award-winning gallery and museum situated in the cultural heart of Coventry. The Herbert has a large and wide-ranging collection including social history, archaeology, natural history and art. There are around 6,000 works in the Herbert's visual arts collection, the earliest of which is an Elizabethan portrait attributed to Lucas de Heere. British life and landscape feature in canvases by LS Lowry, Stanley Spencer, David Bomberg, Paul Nash and George Shaw. The Gallery collects new and recent art in a variety of media and styles, currently developing a collection of art on the themes of conflict, peace and reconciliation. Temporary exhibition spaces have hosted collections from museums nationally and internationally. The Herbert recently underwent a vast redevelopment in preparation for Coventry UK City of Culture, enabling the gallery to display more works and major world-class exhibitions. It will take a few months to crochet dinosaurs for novices. Nonetheless, the basic stitches can be learned in a day or week, including the magic ring, single crochet, increase, and invisible decrease. Our programme of events and activities is tailored to visitors of all ages, helping them learn more about the Jurassic period, fossils, and the evolution of the natural world we inhabit.January 2023 There's now just one month left until Dippy the dinosaur arrives at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum

The gigantic structure, which was previously based at The Natural History Museum, will be in Coventry for the next three years. Dippy is a replica of a Diplodocus skeleton, which first arrived in London in 1905. Dippy’s three year stay in Coventry comes after a 110-year tenure at the Natural History Museum, beginning in 1905 and more recently an eight-city tour across the UK, where Dippy spent time in Belfast, Birmingham, Cardiff, Dorchester, Glasgow, Newcastle upon Tyne, Norwich and Rochdale. Slots are bookable in 15 minute intervals. There are no set times for viewing and you visitors can stay as long as they wish. Our Learning Team will share a short, interactive talk with our visitors, aimed at families, but all are welcome. Standing at the feet of this 26-foot Diplodocus, you will learn more about Dippy and get hands-on with some of the fossils from the Herbert’s natural history collection.

This T Rex Dinosaur Amigurumi Pattern is just what you need to create a unique gift. The amigurumi T Rex’s authentic coloring and excellent detailing will please even the most particular future paleontologist. Not only is this a thrilling opportunity for visitors to learn about natural history, but it is also expected to bring more tourists to the city and have a positive impact on the local economy. The best part of it all is that it is free to visit!” Dippy’s long-term loan to Herbert Art Gallery & Museum comes after the venue underwent a vast refurbishment in preparation for Coventry UK City of Culture, enabling the gallery to display more works and major world-class exhibitions including The Turner Prize 2021. These family-friendly talks will last approximately 20 minutes, in a relaxed and informal environment.

Councillor David Welsh, Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities at Coventry City Council, said: “Having Dippy on display in Coventry is fantastic for the city. It is another example of how Coventry is attracting world-famous exhibits and growing the arts and culture offer following our year as City of Culture. They were huge, plant-eating dinosaurs, with long whip-like tails. They grew to about 24-26 metres long and probably weighed up to around 15 tonnes. Marguerite Nugent, CV Life Director of Culture, said: “We are excited to be welcoming Dippy to the Herbert very soon and look forward to giving as many people as possible the opportunity to see the famous dinosaur in person. Dippy the dinosaur is a life-size, plaster-of-paris replica of a Diplodocus carnegii skeleton. It became the first Diplodocus to go on display anywhere in the world when it was gifted to the Natural History Museum by Andrew Carnegie on 12 May 1905. The iconic 26-metre long, 4.17 metre-high cast has been loaned to the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum and will be on display in our Covered Court from Monday 20th February as part of the free installation Dippy in Coventry: The Nation’s Favourite Dinosaur.

It’s a brilliant opportunity for the Herbert, but with how much footfall it will bring, it’s also a huge opportunity for Coventry and the wider economy. The Tyrannosaurus Rex may be the most dangerous dinosaur of them all — but this little baby refuses to be a tyrant. He just wants to cuddle with his diplodocus teddy. Yes! Some amigurumi patterns are beginner-friendly. They use simple stitches – most patterns are crocheted using single crochet. For amigurumi, you will need to learn the magic circle (which is difficult to get the hang of initially but with some practice you will get it), single crochet, increases, and the invisible decrease.
