About this deal

Carole King was born Carol Joan Klein in New York City. She grew up in Brooklyn with her father — a firefighter — and her mother, a school teacher. Mrs. Kleinloved music and the theater, and made sure her daughter was exposed to both. By the age of three, Carol (the final “e” came later) was showing an enthusiasm for music and a highly accurate sense of pitch. At age four, her mother began teaching her the rudiments of piano technique, music theory and harmony. Carol easily learned the popular songs she heard on the radio, and soon began writing songs of her own. At age 15 she auditioned for ABC Paramount Records and caught the ear of producer Don Costa, who placed her under contract. She recorded her first singles as a singer, without notable success, but continued to write music and learn the record business. 1959: Husband and wife songwriting team Carole King and Gerry Goffin in RCA recording studio in New York City. Carole King’s Tapestry album would become for a time, one of the biggest selling albums in popular music history. It was a record that contained new songs, but also presented fans with new versions of Carole King songs she had written in the 1960s for various artists. Carole King continued to release albums thought out the 1970s on a consistent basis. Her recorded output slowed down in the 1980s and 1990s. Her last album of new material, Love Makes the World Go Around, was released in 2001. Pearls: "Top Albums/CDs - Volume 33, No. 23". RPM. 1980-08-30. Archived from the original (PHP) on 2014-01-06 . Retrieved 2014-01-01. Tapestry is part of the American songbook. I heard those songs even before I knew who she was. I love that book Girls Like Us, a trio of biographies of Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon and Carole King and the story behind Tapestry. The record before it [1970’s Writer] hadn’t performed that well, so she had it in her head that this one had to be great. She was meditating a lot. She was probably in some mental-spiritual prime, and then when she realised what fame entailed she was like: “No way.” She cared more about her personal life. Tapestry' at 50: How Carole King 'bet on herself' to record a singer-songwriter classic". Los Angeles Times. 2021-02-04 . Retrieved 2022-03-22.Note: As with our best albums of the 1960s, we’ve limited each artist to two albums. That means artists like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Stevie Wonder and David Bowie all had some stellar work bumped from the list—but it also means you’ll have more to get angry about, so have at it. Yet the bond with Mississippi, and Indianola in particular, would prove unbreakable. In 2005, Mississippi state House and Senate declared February 15, BB King Day. The man of the hour was overcome with emotion. When you write a song it’s almost mystical. It feels as if the words just come out and it can be months or even years later you realise: “ That’s what was happening.” I’d love to know who those songs are about. I think female artists are great at just letting it all show. As artists, my sisters and I feel like having Carole always in our lives definitely inspired us. Margo Price New York’s favorite daughter is simply one of the most successful songwriters in modern music history. Born in Manhattan, her father was a New York City Firefighter and her mother was a teacher. Carole King’s songwriting career began in 1958 with the release of the single “The Right Girl.” From that point on through the 1960s, Carole King enjoyed great success writing multiple hit songs for various artists. I had been listening to B since I was a teenager,” says Szymcyzk. “I already knew the reputation he had among his peers. B could put more soul or heartbreak in a single note than other players could in a dozen. He was a one of a kind as a guitar player.”

These days Szymcyzk is probably best known for his production work with the Eagles, including their epic Hotel California. He also worked with Joe Walsh, the J Geils Band, Johnny Winter and many many more. In the late 60s, however, he was a fresh pair of ears with some very good ideas. It was Szymcyzk who convinced BB to record with young musicians and not his touring band.

Both “Nightingale,” and “Jazzman,” broke the U.S, Billboard Charts Top 10 list. But it was the jazz-inspired riffs of Carole King’s “Jazzman,” that defined one of Carole King’s most unique singles of her career. With legendary saxophonist Tom Scott blowing throughout the tune, Carole King went on to record one of her finest vocals ever.

On The Go

Suicide’s eponymous 1977 debut, in terms of style and influence, is one of the most groundbreaking releases in the history of music. I don’t think that’s hyperbole, when you consider that it’s regarded as the first synth-pop record, and has since gone to inspire legions of bands, from Joy Division to MGMT. What’s interesting is that, unlike most seminal records, it still sounds ahead of its time today. The reverb, bleakness and atonal drone might have turned off much of the general public, but like all great artists, Suicide’s Alan Vega and Martin Rev had the balls to sound like sex, danger, madness and ultimately possibility. — Drew Fortune He became the Beale Street Blues Boy, eventually shortening it to BB, or just B to his friends. I would have just turned 18 when Tapestry came out, when I was really being influenced by singers and songwriters. Carole King was an inspiration. She was a woman, and she wrote amazing songs – so you’d learn by listening to It’s Too Late or whatever, over and over. She set the stage for other singer-songwriters who came along after her, because there wasn’t a market yet and the industry didn’t know what to do with us.

A never-seen concert film of classic singer-songwriter Carole King’s first-ever show outside the US in 1973 will be released by Eagle Vision on 14 June. Live at Montreux 1973 captures her performance at the Montreux Pavillon as part of that year’s Montreux Jazz Festival, and includes hits from King’s landmark albums of the early 1970s, Tapestry, Writer and the then-just-released Fantasy. Tapestry was one of the first records my mother and I bonded over. It was so meaningful to sing in unison with my mom to a guttural, honest account performed by a stranger to whom I felt so inexplicably connected: a friend, a sister, a mother, and somebody’s daughter, a low voice and an attitude. From that point onward, I carried her music and spirit with me. Compilation albums [ edit ] List of compilation albums, with selected chart positions and certifications Masterpiece’ is a very heavy word,” Szymcyzk says thoughtfully. “Personally, for me the high point of B’s and mine working relationship was Completely Well. That was the album where my vision for him came true for the first time and got him off the chitlin circuit, and got both of us a huge hit record with The Thrill Is Gone.” You can hear that in King’s guitar playing, not least in his wonderfully soulful solo on Chains And Things. The song could be considered the Seeds take on The Thrill Is Gone. Chains And Things broods its way through its almost five-minute running time. According to Szymcyzk, similarities to BB’s signature tune were unintentional.Carole King performing in London in 1970. Photograph: Gijsbert Hanekroot/Redferns MC Taylor, Hiss Golden Messenger After spending most of the 1960s writing hits for other artists, Carole King started a solo career at the dawn of the 1970s. Her 1971 second studio album, Tapestry, became her breakout work as a phenomenal commercial and critical success. This multiple Grammy Award winning album features a dozen tunes written on piano, mostly new, but also a few classics from King’s hit-making days in the sixties. And those hit-making days continued as two singles from the album topped the pop charts. Wrap Around Joy: "Top Albums/CDs - Volume 22, No. 12" (PHP). RPM. 1974-11-09 . Retrieved 2014-01-01.
