About this deal

Firstly, it probably shows a landscape that matches the memories of people still alive today. This makes it especially useful for those starting on researching their own history, and want to anchor their recollections in some of the streets as they stood mid-century. A lot of this has changed, but this map shows Liverpool before so much remodelling took place. At the same time, there are 1930s social housing like Gerard Gardens, and St Andrew’s Gardens, which many readers will have memories of. It’s a gateway between worlds. A navigation tool

Born into a Quaker family in 1822 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, Francis Frith founded his own photographic publishing company in 1860 with the aim of creating accurate and truthful depictions of as many cities, towns and villages as possible. The first houses to be built were on York Street which welcomed its first resident in 1854. Manor Place with 16 houses was built in 1856. A second phase of building started in 1872 including a new road, South View, with six houses – and six more added in 1877. It's hard to believe Liverpool wasn't even a city until the 1880s. Prior to that it was a town and a borough. On a summer day in 2001, Coe and a small band of investigators literally “broke into” a suspected tunnel in the Paddington area of Edge Hill. With the help of a digger, they made a small hole in the roof of what turned out to be an old cellar: the upper level of one of the tunnel systems. Admiral Grove, a modest residential street in Liverpool in the working-class neighbourhood of the Dingle, holds the childhood home of one of the most iconic drummers in history – Ringo Starr.

I’ve included the map I traced, so you can see the wider context. This should help deal with the inevitable inaccurary (see below). The map is from the early 1950s, but I believe it took a lot of its information from earlier (perhaps 1920s) Ordnance Survey maps. However, I am a bit perplexed about whether there were possibly two Darwen Streets – an earlier one that was demolished and then a newer one in Victorian times. Today, Water Street remains a hub of commerce, culture, and finance in Liverpool. Elegant buildings house financial institutions and cultural organisations, and, of course, the blend of old-world charm and modern commerce is pretty cool. 9. Forthlin Road Penny Lane is popular with students, thanks to the affordable rent. As you can imagine, life in Liverpool is pretty awesome for students – there are far worse places to live on than one of the most famous streets in the world! 5. William Brown Street

Prior to the clearances from the 1960s onwards, there were up to 50 Victorian streets within the boundaries of the modern Everton Park alone, but the district spread much further – north, south, east and west. We want you to literally put your street on the map within this ‘search and find’ section. It’s an extremely simple process. These fascinating images capture life and people at work and play in Liverpool city-centre in the eighties. Paul and his family moved to 20 Forthlin Road when he was around 13 until he was famous! It was on this street that he honed his musical skills, collaborating with John Lennon and laying the foundation for his world-changing career.
