About this deal

I live in a Victorian seaside town with a lot of old houses. One of the services I offer as a professional decorator is the renovation of old floorboards. Now old floorboards were never meant to be on show when installed and they’re often very beaten up. I quite like that though as it just adds to the character. Osmo Polyx-Oil is my product of choice for coating the floorboards up for a few reasons. The rich, deep, subtle finish has the perfect affect to suit any older house or farm cottage. The finished product seems to last for years and years. Use as a base coat for wooden floors and use Osmo Polyx Oil Original as a top coat for the ultimate colour finish Application of top coat of clear Osmo Polyx®-Oil Original can be carried out once the first coat has dried. However, if the first coat was a coloured Osmo finish ( eg Polyx®-Oil Tint or Wood Wax Finish Transparent) wait approx. 24hrs before applying Osmo Polyx®-Oil Original clear top coat.

It’s always a great idea to start with the best canvas possible, sand your wood through the grits upto P120, this is a fine sand on bare timber in preparation for finishing not suitable for removing varnish or paint. Always sand with the grain of Two coats can be applied on wooden furniture, doors and joinery, but only one coat is recommended on wooden flooring – a clear top coat of Osmo Polyx®-Oil is required (approx. 24hrs after the first coat). One thing I would avoid for at least 2 weeks it putting down any rugs, this will certainly slow down the curing process and result in a patch on you floor when in the future you come to lift the rug. Based on renewable raw materials – soybean, sunflower, thistle oil, and carnauba and candelilla waxTinting: Osmo Wood Wax Finish can also be used to lightly tint Polyx®-Oil 3054 up to a ratio of 10:1. Do not exceed a ratio of 10 parts Polyx®-Oil 3054 to 1 part Wood Wax Finish. Cork tiles are best treated before fitting to avoid overlapping treatment of edges which would lead to prolonged drying times. A cork floor treated with Osmo Polyx-Oil will get a robust, elastic and wear-resistant surface which will harden further over 2-3 weeks. Due to the extreme absorption power of this highly elastic, natural, material we recommend the following procedure: Osmo Polyx Oil Tints which come in a range of colours. The whole Polyx Oil range comes in handy 5ml sachets to do your test areas before purchasing a bigger tin. One of the key benefits of Polyx-Oil Effect is its durability. Please Note: Oiled or waxed surfaces should not be cleaned with a steam cleaner or steam mop as these will degrade or potentially strip the oiled finish. RenovationA. Osmo 3032 used to be called 'satin-matt' but a number of years ago, they changed the name from 'satin-matt' to 'satin', the sheen level of the product however remains the same.

The original clear hard wax oil designed for most wooden floors & surfaces. Available in Satin, Matt, Semi-Matt and Glossy One of the key benefits of Polyx-Oil Effect is its exceptional durability. They offered me a replacement bottle, but they were not at all interested in helping me sort out the damage already done. They told me to sand it off by hand. I did try, but it was a large sheet of wood and it would be a difficult task under normal circumstances. I happened to be 8.5 months pregnant and couldn’t risk it. I ended up paying for a simple machine and finishing the job myself when, by law, I could have billed them for a new table or for a professional carpenter. The last thing to consider is sheen! Sheen refers to the amount of light the finish reflects from the surface. Contrary to popular belief this does not have any influence over durability. Matt – Gives you a flat matt look and feel Semi Matt – A slight sheen added to the wood for those who don’t want dead matt Satin – The halfway house between matt and gloss Gloss – Gives the light a good surface to reflect off Oils need to penetrate the surface of the wood, once the wood is saturated and will not accept any more, excess oil drys on the surface and this is what marks easily. It is not only the type of wood that can effect this, also the method of application. Rollers application, for example, will apply more per area than cloth application, and so may not be ideal for hardwoods.

Occasional Maintenance: If the oiled surface remains light in colour yet there is a reduction in water repellency, refresh the surface with Osmo Maintenance Oil 3079 Clear Matt. Before using Osmo Maintenance Oil 3079, damp clean the surface using diluted Osmo Wash and Care, or alternatively Osmo Spray cleaner and allow to fully dry. For small areas Osmo Maintenance Oil 3079 can be applied thinly with a lint free cloth or white pad. Remove excess product. Allow for good ventilation while drying. A small trial is highly recommended first. Yes, over-application of wood oil can be easily remedied by dampening a clean, lint free cloth in white spirit and wiping off the excess oil. Take care not to use too much white spirit and wipe in the direction of the wood grain. This will break down and remove the surplus oil from the surface of the wood. Osmo Polyx Oil Raw retains the 'raw', light characteristics of untreated wood, meaning no more 'permanent wet look'. The ingredients use a small amount of white pigment to neutralise this darkening effect which generally occurs after application of a clear wood oil. The end result is a smooth beautiful finish with nearly-invisible protection. Keeps light interior woodwork and flooring looking light, ideal for Scandi-style interiors.

Wood first treated with Osmo Wood Protector 4006 may appear a little more dark. Always trial apply Osmo Polyx®-Oil 3044 Raw over the Wood Protector to ensure the final appearance meets with expectations. What I can tell you is that easy marking is a sign of over or under application of the oil, over application being the most common. Over application can be too much oil applied to the surface, or because the wood is a tight grained, hardwood, or because it has been over sanded and this has closed the grain. Wood surfaces treated with Polyx®-Oil Tints are easy to maintain. Remove coarse dirt with a soft brush or a vacuum cleaner. To clean, add Osmo Wash and Care concentrate to mop water and clean the surface with a damp (not wet!) mop. Polyx®-Oil Raw is designed for sanded or raw wood only – not suitable for dark wood species, or smoked/ fumed wood. Free sachet delivery is available on all Rust-Oleum sachets. These are shipped direct from the manufacturer using Whistl. Can take 5-10 working days.
