About this deal

Every literary festival stays in an author’s mind for slightly individual reasons. I shall remember the Oxford festival for: This is an interesting read. I'm not sure it entirely achieves what he sets out to achieve - demonstrating how the Allies Learned to Win the Second World War - because the individual stories of officers don't quite come together to support that thesis. On 14 January 2015, Murray announced his formation of the "Free United Kingdom Party" (FUKP) [39] and declared his candidacy, deploying his Pub Landlord persona, for the seat of South Thanet [40] running against UKIP leader Nigel Farage, as parliamentary candidate in the 2015 general election. [41] [42] Murray's agent, Dan Lloyd, told the BBC: "it's definitely happening". [41] The party's logo is an upside-down pound sign, not dissimilar to UKIP's purple and gold pound sign. [43] Murray said: "it seems to me that the UK is ready for a bloke waving a pint around, offering common sense solutions", adding: "let it be known that like many of the parliamentary hopefuls in the forthcoming election, I have no idea where South Thanet is – but did that stop Margaret Thatcher from saving the Falkland Islands? No!” [44] Stephen Fry Up wins Walkers Clash of the Comics for Red Nose Day". Talking Retail. 18 March 2011 . Retrieved 15 August 2013. Connor, Laura (8 May 2015). A stimulating and rewarding on-stage conversation; a lively informed and tolerant audience; privileged access to the great treasures of the Bodleian, and finally, wonderfully interesting dinner companions to help me conclude the best day I have enjoyed at any festival – anywhere. Al Murray's passion for military history and the Second World War in particular has always run parallel with his comedy and was brought to the fore with several acclaimed and award-winning television shows and the recent huge success of his podcast We Have Ways of Making You Talk which he hosts with fellow bestselling military author James Holland. In his first serious narrative book, Command showcases Al Murray's passion for this pivotal period in the twentieth century, as he writes an engaging, entertaining and sharp analysis of the key allied military leaders in the conflict. [19] In addition, the character has ghost written four books: The Pub Landlord's Book of British Common Sense, The Pub Landlord's Think Yourself British, The Pub Landlord's Great British Quiz Book and Let's Re-Great Britain. Cambridge Footlights ( Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Tony Slattery, Emma Thompson, Penny Dwyer and Paul Shearer) Murray was educated at Bedford School, [9] and St Edmund Hall, Oxford, where he read Modern History. [10] He later said of his time at school: "When I was nine I was sent to boarding school, which I despised. The first five years were hideous because I wanted to be at home. I guess I resented my parents a little and it put tons of distance between us. One of the things I took from boarding school is that it made me emotionally self-sufficient." Election of a Member of Parliament: South Thanet Constituency". Thanet District Council. Archived from the original on 7 May 2015 . Retrieved 26 April 2015. Al Murray is one of the most successful comics in the UK with his alter-ego, The Pub Landlord. He has had four previous bestselling books, 'The Pub Landlord’s Book of British Common Sense', 'The Pub Landlord Says Think Yourself British', 'Great British Pub Quiz Book' and 'Watching War Films with My Dad'. I would not recommend it to the Expert Military Historian, who will already know more (or who will want to know more) about each of the subjects than the book will tell him but is a good choice for the casual history buff or the interested beginner who I believe are the people Murry has actually written the book for. Murray presented Al Murray's Road to Berlin on the Discovery Channel. This was a series about the last phase of the Second World War, taking him from the beaches of Normandy, through Arnhem and up the Rhine, ending in Berlin. He drove around in a restored Willys jeep, and interviewed survivors from both sides of the war. In the episode about Operation Market Garden he parachuted, together with veterans, from an aircraft, to commemorate the battle. That the Allies were going to win, barring Germany of Japan discovering some wonder weapon or winning the race to produce the nuclear bomb, the reader is left in no doubt. Initially with Germany having a big head start in re-armament production, development of weapons and modernised tactics, the battle was just to remain in the war. There are the battles in North Africa, of which Montgomery was heavily involved, where tank warfare came to the fore, with British tanks being inadequate in build and fire power but also being used ineffectively. It is here that Tuker proves to be effective, but then later in the war the spirit of continuous improvement leads to ‘Hobart’s specials’ tanks resigned and modified to carry out specific roles during the ‘D Day’ Normandy landings.

I knew Al Murray was interested in WWII, but I have to say I was very impressed with the research that has obviously gone in to this book. It is eminently readable with lots of anecdotes and first hand accounts about the commanders selected for inclusion. In April 2019, Murray started a podcast with historian James Holland called 'We Have Ways of Making You Talk', where they discuss battles and campaigns of World War II. Over 700 episodes have been released, including interviews with veterans and other historians, as well as Murray's narration of the book, 'The Cauldron' by Zeno. Radford, Ceri (4 October 2014).
