About this deal

I went to a BP5ES plug (slightly hotter than the BP6) and switched to 87 octane gas as another step toward reaching my goals. BMW 2002 Fjord Blue Ireland Stage II • Bilstein Sports • Ireland Headers • Weber 38 • 292 Cam • 9.5:1 Pistons • 123Tune Bluetooth 15" BBS I have a standard CP 150BHP car and have recently fitted the NGK BP 5 ES plugs. It runs very well on these, better than on the 6ES's. The NGK Standard Spark Plug is constructed from durable material that is corrosion and abrasion resistant. The spark plug insulators are made of 99 percent pure alumina silicate, allowing for longer insulator noses for reduced fouling. This spark plug features a triple gasket sealing process that eliminates fuel leakage. It also includes a solid copper core that provides superior heat dissipation and conductivity. This spark plug has resistor that is produced with a glass and carbon mixture, which is fired to ensure superior performance and durability. It has corrugated ribs that prevent flashover and cold rolled threads to inhibit damage to the cylinder head.

I understand the generally preferred plug for TR5/6s is the NGK BP6ES, but note the BP5ES is specifically for use in lead free head - VUX's head is gas-flowed and unleaded. Records indicate jets being done in the '80s on the carb. Car was from the Bay Area and is now in Chicago, so not a ton of altitude difference there. Hi Tom, what compression ratio are you running on the Weber engined car. Is it a Stage 2 type head? however Denso have given excellent results over the years, not just in std A series engines but in everything from tuned Minors to turbo charged modern performance engines, their platinum plugs are superb, yes they are expensive but will last around 60,000 miles with no noticeable loss of performance. Their iridium plugs are great for turbo cars where there will be very high compression under boost as they generally give a very strong spark. From what I've seen on this forum the P.I. cars do better with hotter plugs. The above issue about #s 5&6 is a recurring theme too. Some have fattened the plenum to 4" in an effort to correct this. One new Champion failed after about five miles so I swapped it for one of the old ones. The following week another one failed so I threw them in the bin and put four new NGK ones in and never had any more trouble. Switched to hotter BP5ES and Regular gas ......and now it runs better than ever and the plugs are picture perfect after 1,000 miles. Suggest posting a photo of your existing plugs as they came out ... a look at the threads can offer some information about whether you’ve got an appropriate plug. -KB

I think I can safely say that it may have plugs in it from 1999, which is probably good because they are what the long-term owner always ran in it (1970-2000), and the car has only had 4,000 miles put on it since 2004. A spark plug produces a high intensity electrical discharge (the spark) inside the combustion chamber, igniting your fuel to keep the engine firing. The guy I was dealing with from Champion told me that they had a 10% failure rate straight from productionTop End Performance steve k., May 4, 2020 2900 views0 comments Top End Performance Has Been Your Source For The Best Prices On Brand Name, Top Quality Car Parts Since 1984. With a CR over 11:1, I haven't dared go to 5s. If you want to try it, I'd try in one cylinder and watch the colour very carefully for signs of overheating. The car ran well before, but I have no idea how long the plugs were in there for. They were normal grey/brown when they came out, and the gaps were probably nearer .70 thou, so imagine a fair while, although the engine has only covered circa 2k miles since a rebuild in 2003.
