About this deal

Starting with the Cinebench R23 multi-core results, we find that the 12400 is good for just over 12,000 points, and when following the 65-watt spec, it was just 3% slower. That being the case, it's incredible to see the base-spec 12400 beating the 11600K by an 8% margin and the 10600K by a massive 32%.

With a TDP of 65 W, the Core i5-12400 consumes typical power levels for a modern PC. Intel's processor supports DDR4 and DDR5 memory with a dual-channel interface. For communication with other components in the machine, Core i5-12400 uses a PCI-Express Gen 5 connection. This processor features the UHD Graphics 730 integrated graphics solution. Pairing the Core i5 12400 with an affordable DDR4-based B660 motherboard, then is absolutely the way to go for the vast majority of PC gamers looking for a new budget platform.Overall, the Ryzen processors are still the most power-efficient chips we've ever tested, but Alder Lake closes the gap significantly. However, Intel's improvement here is noteworthy: We measured a peak of 88W with the 12400 with the power limits lifted, while the previous-gen 11400 peaked at a whopping 145W. Bear in mind that faster completion times and lower task energy are ideal. That means processors that are closest to the bottom left corner are best. It's easy to see that Intel has made a massive generational improvement here; the Core i5-12400 is far more efficient than the 11400. It was up to 15% slower than the 12600K when looking at the 1% lows. Overall a good result here for Intel's new base model Core i5 processor. You should plan on using a 600-series B- or H-series motherboard with the 12400, and there are a plethora of options available that support DDR4 memory. AMD's AM4 motherboard ecosystem is generally less expensive, but AM4's connectivity options have come a bit long in the tooth.

The i5-12400 performs much better in Far Cry 6, at least when compared to the 5600X as it was up to 10% faster, beating even the 5800X and 11700K. The fully modular cabling on the Toughpower GF3 allows for easy customization and cable management, optimizing airflow and minimizing clutter in my build. For system builders, understanding the TDP of a CPU, such as the Intel Core i5-12400, is critical in choosing the right CPU cooler. A CPU with a high TDP will require a more robust cooler, such as a liquid cooling system, to prevent overheating. On the other hand, a CPU with a low TDP may be adequately cooled by a simple air cooler. Read more about CPU coolers below, along with our recommended coolers. When compared to past generations, it did roughly match the 11700K and was quite a bit faster than the 11600K, in that sense performance was very good.
