About this deal

The Humax FOXSAT-HDR can record two channels at the same time. You can start watching a programme that is being recorded from its beginning even though the rest of the programme is still being recorded (chase play).

This Freesat & Freesat+ Setup Guide is based on the Humax FOXSAT-HD and Humax FOXSAT-HDR receivers, Setup on other brands and models may vary, see your Instruction Manual for details. My personal experience of Sony TVs is that the built in DLNA client is pretty poor. Perhaps the reason some play and some don't is related to the content of the recording. For example, maybe the Sony client can't play certain types of audio and can only play recordings with "simple" stereo audio. You must be running a non freesat tune. To retune in Freesat mode requires access to the Freesat home transponder which is a horizontally polarised transponder. I have postulated that it may be possible to install an alternative PSU, but as I have not been afflicted by a fault such as this I have not spent the time that would be necessary to study the problem. ITV, however, is a problem. Its broadcast bit-rate is often much lower than the BBC's and it frankly looks dire in standard-definition on Freesat. We haven't seen an ITV HD broadcast yet in the few hours since installing the Foxsat-HDR but previous broadcasts viewed on the non-PVR version were superb.

Standard definition BBC broadcasts and most other channels look as good on the Humax as they do on Freeview and Sky.

WARNING: Please note that once you perform Factory Reset, all data such as the antenna setting information, channel list and all user configured data will be deleted. The entire front panel drops down to reveal a bank of regularly used buttons, a common interface smartcard slot and a USB port, which enables you to move MP3 and JPEG files between a pen drive/external HDD and the unit’s hard-disk, turning it into a multimedia hub. But even more impressive is that you can archive TV recordings on an external hard-disk. The quality of standard-definition pictures on this box compares very well with those of Sky and Freeview, but as with any digital TV platform the quality varies wildly depending on the broadcast quality – ITV channels, for example, look awful but the BBC’s roster looks a lot sharper and cleaner. Question 4) Why does Foxsat come out of standby and stays on BBC 1 London which is not even on my TV guide, as I have hidden all none HD channels? No idea why it comes on in the afternoon and stays on until I turn it off despite the next recording is not scheduled until in the evening. We were excited by the inclusion of BBC HD in the line-up of channels, as this was the first time free-to-air HD programming had been made available in the UK. For further opinions on the Freesat service, see our Humax Foxsat-HD review (What’s New, Shopper 247). Under Setup, you can configure the installation settings, perform a Freesat Tune, Manual Tune, update software and restore the receiver to its Factory settings. Finding recordings is easy thanks to the Media List’s terrific layout – it’s broken down into video, radio, music and photo and from here you can setup playlists or copy content to a USB device.
