Glenlivet is strong but sweet, like a strong female leading role. Movie that comes to mind is definitely Steel Magnolias. Since this is one of the most easy-to-find single malts in the world, I feel like I’m compelled to compare the price of this to other unpeated single malts of the same price range that can serve as better alternatives. For me this system works perfectly. I know that anything over 30 is "buy every bottle." 25-30 is buy a new bottle once the last is finished. 20-25 is buy at the right price. Under 20 is don't buy (unless it is a gift). Under 15 is "re-gift." And under 10 is very, very sad. Apples, pears, hint of oak, honey, again a little floral, vanilla, caramel. But it's balanced very nicely. It has a lovely little nose of fruit, apples and pears, cinnamon, toffee, honey, vanilla, oak, little floral and a very slight cocoa aroma that appears and disappears. We mash the grist with hot spring water in a ‘mash tun’, a machine with rotating arms that stirs the mixture. The modern ones we use here on Speyside have been designed to obtain the maximum possible sugar and starch from the grist.Color, Body, Aesthetic experience: Nice golden honey amber. Medium to light body. Points for age but not much else.

The ex-sherry cask aged components blended here must be very minimal. I’m more inclined to think that a small portion of ex-sherry cask-matured Glenlivet was blended in this expression, rather than it being a finish. The distillery DNA and American oak flavors are more noticeable from start to end, while he ex-sherry notes like the dates, cherries and milk chocolate are sparingly present on the nose and finish. The taste is silky caramel, with a rich mix of pears and apples juxtaposed with cinnamon and warm oak. Subsequent sips bring out some honey and hints of sherry. More complex than I expected, but not overly so - and it is significantly richer than you would expect from the nose.The water we use comes from Josie’s Well, a natural spring that bubbles out of The Glenlivet’s dark earth. In the mash tun, the enzymes developed during the malting process convert the starch in the malt into sugar. The clear, sugary liquid produced by mashing is known as ‘wort’. FERMENTATION

This dram is basically what you'd expect to get from a mature Glenlivet. It's got the smooth, inoffensive every-man qualities that makes the brand so popular, but with the wonderful mature complexity that comes with age. However, I may not buy this one again, at least not for a while. Where I live it is literally double the price of the 12. The 12 is certainly not as good. But is it worth paying double for? Don't get me wrong, it truly is considerably better than the twelve. I've yet to see how the 15 year old French oak measures up, but I digress... This is different from what I remember; I recall tasting more green apples and pears in the 12. Is this really the same whisky as the ones in the green bottle? Or have my senses just changed? Is it both? It’s been a few years since I last tried this whisky after all. You are responsible for all activities through your account. In the mouth: Like the nose, the red fruits and sherry flavors dominate. I get light tastes of cherry candy, chocolate, blood orange, dates, coffee, sultanas, caramelized orange peel oil and toasted chestnut. In between those are subtle flashes of sulfur. It's a ridiculously smooth, medium bodied dram with some wonderful complexity. White pepper, cinnamon, apples, pears, brown sugar, etc. Basically the body delivers on (almost) everything the nose promises. American oak comes in a bit later, weaving nicely in with the lingering spices. Great finish. Because this is one of the most accessible brands in the world, I feel like I have to ask a couple of questions: One, Is this worth the price premium above the 12? Two, how would this compare to similar priced but lesser-known alternatives?

Finally, here it is - The Glenlivet 18 YO single malt from speyside. In 2011 Glenlivet 18 YO received a new bottle. Now it has become the same as The Glenlivet 21 YO and The Glenlivet XXV. Colorful rich liquid in bottle predicts an enjoyable journey to satisfying emotions by exploring the story of The Glenlivet 18 YO, which is matured in oak barrel. So let’s start it. The Glenlivet 15 French Oak Reserve is aged for under a year in both new and charred Limousin French oak. The casks are then re-charred after each use. This is wasn’t mentioned in the tasting, but previous tastings have mentioned charring is said to reset a cask. I guess they want to keep the French oak influence as pure as they can. There is also some European oak/ex-sherry cask in this blend.On the nose: Tropical fruits in the first half. Earthy in the second half. Initially, this is similar to the 12-year-old. There are medium intense aromas of pineapple, dried apricot, sapodilla, and starfruit. After these come light aromas of Fuji apples, honey and coconut sugar syrup. The intensity turns up a bit. It allows me to smell honeydew, orange jam and orange peel. Subtle aromas of French oak characteristics come out. An assortment of mushrooms like dried shiitake and grounded chaga comes to mind.
