About this deal

This activity utilizes Julia Donaldson’s book to teach character traits. Students will match the trait to the character; reinforcing the idea that each character has a variety of personality traits that can change, for better or worse, over the course of the story. I also continued to write “grown-up” songs and perform them in folk clubs and on the radio, and have recently released two CDs of these songs.

BBC One - Room on the Broom

Admittedly his favourite book in the whole wide world is a bland little story about monkeys - but it does have a button which makes monkey noises when you press it, so I can see the appeal! A witch and her cat fly around on a broom and the witch accidentally drops some of her things. Other animals on the ground return her items to her and ask for a ride on the broom. The witch says yes to them all, but is there room for all of these new friends? I really enjoy writing verse, even though it can be fiendishly difficult. I used to memorise poems as a child and it means a lot to me when parents tell me their child can recite one of my books. Therefore, says Porter, “it’s impossible for a guest to run through the whole attraction and ruin the experience for everyone else”.

My real breakthrough was THE GRUFFALO, again illustrated by Axel. We work separately - he’s in London and I’m in Glasgow - but he sends me letters with lovely funny pictures on the envelopes. Budget is a creative challenge,” adds Porter. “As creatives we push the bounds of reality and what is physically possible. By using a lot of clever techniques, we are able to create these lush environments. On Room on the Broom _ A Magical Journey, for example, I worked with the project delivery team to ensure there was a 3D animatronic and interactive in every scene.” The witch eventually makes room on the broom for a cat, dog, bird, and frog. Are all of these characters considered friends? Students can discuss what makes people friends. Would you have made friends with the witch? How do you treat your friends? Further, because the witch allows everyone on her broom, it snaps in two. Students can consider why the witch continued to make room on her broom when there wasn’t really room. Every primary-aged story needs a good sensory bin because when it comes to interactive activities, bins are what kids love most! This particular bin is filled with beans, felt witch hats, doll brooms, and more! Questions for Philosophical Discussion » Summary Room on the Broom considers questions about friendship, helping others, and teamwork.

I have a little boy and love reading to him, so this reading list will cover the classic (and new) children’s stories we’re enjoying together. Before Malcolm and I had our three sons we used to go busking together and I would write special songs for each country; the best one was in Italian about pasta. It is in my opinion often rather difficult if not even pretty well rare to find poetry specifically conceptualised for younger children that is not only thematically and content wise fun and engaging but that also presents itself at the same time as lyrically and rhythmically adept (in other words, I mean to say that I do tend to find it often not all that easy to find children specific poetry that does not read somewhat awkwardly and haltingly at times, that continuously presents both a good and successful rhyme scheme and a decent and melodious lyrical flow). The guests then land in a swamp, but the wand has been eaten by a bullfrog. Everyone needs to work together to feed the bullfrog by touching the fireflies when they light up. Eventually, the bullfrog gets so full he burps and reveals the wand.

Porter’s experience of creating Screamfest scare attractions in his native Staffordshire each Halloween was useful in managing throughput and creating a sense of emotion. But here, of course, the goal was not to scare his guests. Anyone with small children (and older ones too, I'm sure) will be familiar with Julia Donaldson, in particular The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo's Child, which - along with Room on the Broom - have been made into animated films that regularly show on the ABC. My son, at three, enjoys the books but finds the movies too scary - he's still young like that. I studied Drama and French at Bristol University, where I met Malcolm, a guitar-playing medic to whom I’m now married. The dog, cat, frog, and bird all contributed to the statue to scare off the dragon. Would it have mattered if the frog had refused to help? Chessington is all about animals and taking families on a wild adventure,” says Andrew Porter, creative lead at Merlin Entertainments‘ Resort Theme Parks group. “Animals feature quite heavily in the narrative to Room on the Broom. So it just seemed like the right story for us to keep bringing in the younger family market that Julia Donaldson attracts.”The Dragon is fearsome, malicious and likes being mean as can be. He also gains pleasure of eating witches. Despite that, he is later revealed to be a coward when he got scared by a mud monster (which are the witch's cat, a dog, a green bird and a frog in disguise), showing that he's afraid of big scary monsters.
